Description
NutraBio ZMA
The classic recovery combination — zinc, magnesium and vitamin B6 — in one formula, fully disclosed with no proprietary blends.
Why these three together
ZMA is not an arbitrary grouping. Each ingredient has a role, and B6 in particular is there for a specific reason people usually miss.
- Zinc — required for the proper function of roughly 300 enzymes, and directly involved in testosterone production. It is also lost in sweat, which is why athletes turn up low more often than the general population
- Magnesium — a cofactor in more than 300 enzymatic reactions, central to muscle relaxation and nerve transmission, and one of the few nutrients where dietary shortfall is genuinely widespread. Also lost in sweat
- Vitamin B6 — the one that looks like filler and is not. B6 is a cofactor for the enzymes involved in magnesium uptake into cells, and it is separately involved in neurotransmitter synthesis. It is there to help the other two work
The common thread is that all three are depleted by hard training, and all three are involved in recovery and sleep rather than performance in the session itself.
⚠ The honest position on testosterone
ZMA is heavily marketed as a testosterone booster, and this needs saying clearly.
ZMA does not raise testosterone in people who are not deficient.
The original research that made ZMA popular was conducted in athletes with low zinc and magnesium status, and it showed improvements as those shortfalls were corrected. Subsequent studies in men with adequate zinc and magnesium have generally found no meaningful effect on testosterone at all.
So the fair framing: ZMA corrects deficiencies that suppress hormone production. It does not push hormones above normal. If your zinc and magnesium status is already good, this will not change your testosterone.
That is a narrower claim than the category makes — and it is also a genuinely useful one, because athletes are exactly the group most likely to be short of both. Heavy sweating, high training volumes and restrictive dieting all deplete them.
Where ZMA genuinely delivers: sleep
This is the effect most people actually notice, and it is the better-supported one.
Magnesium is central to the nervous system's ability to wind down — it modulates NMDA receptor activity and supports GABAergic signalling, the calming side of the nervous system. Low magnesium is associated with restless sleep and difficulty relaxing.
Taken before bed, ZMA is better understood as a sleep and recovery product than a hormonal one — and since sleep is where the great majority of recovery and hormonal activity happens, that is not a lesser claim.
Vivid dreams are commonly reported on ZMA, likely related to the B6 and its role in neurotransmitter synthesis. Harmless, and some people enjoy it.
⚠ Take it on an empty stomach — and away from calcium
This is the most common mistake with ZMA, and it directly undermines the product.
Zinc and magnesium compete with calcium for absorption. Taking ZMA with a meal containing dairy, or with a calcium supplement, substantially reduces uptake of both.
Take it 30 to 60 minutes before bed, at least two hours after your last meal — particularly if that meal contained dairy.
⚠ Note the zinc-copper issue. As on our Zinc page: zinc and copper compete for the same absorption pathway, and sustained high-dose zinc can drive copper status down. If you take ZMA every night for months, consider adding copper, and count zinc from your multivitamin too.

Check the B6 amount against your other supplements. As explained on our B-Complex page, B6 is the one B vitamin with a genuine upper limit, and it accumulates across products.
ZMA or separate zinc and magnesium?
| ZMA | All three in one, ratios set for you, single evening dose |
| Magnesium + Zinc separately | Control each dose independently, chelated forms, no B6 stacking |
Buy ZMA if you want one capsule before bed and the standard ratios. Buy them separately if you want more magnesium than the ZMA ratio provides — which many people do — or if you are already getting B6 elsewhere.
How to take it
- 30 to 60 minutes before bed.
- On an empty stomach, at least two hours after eating.
- Never with dairy or a calcium supplement. This is the point people get wrong.
- Every night, including rest days. These are nutrients, not stimulants — status builds over weeks.
- Expect vivid dreams. Common and harmless.
- Consider periodic breaks or added copper if you take it long term.
Who this is for
- Anyone training hard and sweating heavily — both zinc and magnesium are lost that way
- People whose sleep quality has slipped
- Athletes in a caloric deficit, where micronutrient intake usually falls with food intake
- Anyone who cramps or twitches, which is commonly associated with low magnesium
- People who want one evening capsule rather than two separate products
Who this is not for
Anyone expecting a testosterone increase without being deficient. ZMA corrects shortfalls; it does not push hormones above normal.
Anyone already taking zinc in a multivitamin or test formula. Add up your total — the upper limit from all sources is around 40mg.
Anyone taking it with a dairy-containing meal — you are wasting most of it.
Anyone already taking a B-complex, given the B6 accumulation.
If you want magnesium primarily, chelated magnesium on its own lets you take a larger dose without the zinc.
Speak to your doctor if you have kidney disease, or take antibiotics — zinc and magnesium both interfere with the absorption of several.
Not for anyone under 18, pregnant or nursing.
Stack it with: nothing at the same time. Take other minerals in the morning to avoid competition.
Frequently asked questions
Does ZMA boost testosterone?
Only if you are deficient. The original research was in athletes with low zinc and magnesium; studies in men with adequate status generally find no meaningful effect. It corrects shortfalls rather than pushing hormones above normal.
Why can't I take it with food?
Zinc and magnesium compete with calcium for absorption. Taking ZMA with dairy or a calcium supplement substantially reduces uptake of both.
When should I take it?
30 to 60 minutes before bed, at least two hours after your last meal.
Why am I having vivid dreams?
Commonly reported on ZMA, likely related to B6 and its role in neurotransmitter synthesis. Harmless.
What is the B6 for?
It is a cofactor for the enzymes involved in magnesium uptake into cells, and it supports neurotransmitter synthesis. It is there to help the other two work.
Can I take it every night?
Yes, though if you use it for months consider adding copper, since sustained zinc intake competes with copper absorption.
Should I buy ZMA or separate minerals?
ZMA for convenience and standard ratios. Separately if you want more magnesium than the ZMA ratio gives, or if you already get B6 elsewhere.
Will it help me sleep?
That is the effect most people notice. Magnesium supports the calming side of the nervous system, and sleep is where most recovery happens.
