Description
Black Market DEFY
450mg of caffeine from three sources, 10g of pure L-citrulline, 5g of betaine and over 22 grams of active ingredients per serving. Fully disclosed label, no proprietary blends.
This is the second-strongest pre-workout we stock. It is also, unusually for this category, genuinely well dosed on the performance side rather than just the stimulant side.
⚠ 450mg exceeds the FDA's daily figure
The FDA cites 400mg per day as the level not generally associated with negative effects in healthy adults. A full two-scoop serving of DEFY is 450mg — in one sitting, before any coffee.
One scoop is 225mg, and the tub holds 40 scoops precisely so you can take it that way. That is a complete and sensible serving for most people, and it is what we would recommend starting with — indefinitely, for many.
- Start with one scoop. Two should be a deliberate decision, not a default
- No other caffeine on a DEFY day
- Never more than two scoops in 24 hours
- Morning or early afternoon only. 450mg at 4pm still leaves around 225mg at 10pm
The performance side is the real story
Most extreme-stimulant pre-workouts skimp on the ingredients that actually improve training. DEFY does not, and that is worth crediting.
- L-Citrulline, 10g pure. Not citrulline malate — pure citrulline. To match this with the malate form you would need around 20g on the label. This is above the 6 to 8g researched range and among the highest doses on our shelf, alongside MVPre 3.0
- Beta-Alanine, 3.2g. The exact researched dose
- Betaine Anhydrous, 5g. See the honest note below
- Pink Himalayan salt for electrolytes and fluid balance
An honest note on the 5g betaine. The clinically studied dose is 2.5g — which is what Thavage and 110 Percent use. DEFY doubles it.
Doubling a clinical dose does not generally double the effect; most ingredients have a point beyond which more adds little. 5g is not a problem, and betaine is inexpensive and well tolerated — but treat it as generous rather than as twice as effective. Higher doses of betaine are also more likely to cause GI discomfort in some people.
The theanine ratio is worth a closer look
DEFY includes 100mg of L-theanine alongside 450mg of caffeine — a ratio of roughly 1:4.5.
Theanine reduces the jittery edge of caffeine while preserving alertness. But the research most commonly uses a 1:2 ratio — twice as much theanine relative to caffeine as this. Our Caff Plus runs 150mg caffeine to 200mg theanine, which is more than 1:1.
So the theanine here is real but modest. If you tolerate high caffeine well, you will barely notice it. If you are at the edge of your tolerance, it helps — but it will not turn 450mg into a smooth experience.
⚠ Six stimulants, not one
Caffeine from three sources (450mg) — anhydrous for fast onset, Café Alatus, and Infinergy di-caffeine malate for slower release. Staggering flattens the curve; it does not reduce the total.
Dendrobium, 600mg at 10:1 — an orchid extract used as a stimulant. It has a chequered history in supplements, having previously been used to disguise synthetic compounds. Black Market disclose it openly, which is the right approach.
Eria jarensis, 150mg — a stimulant with reported mood and euphoria effects. On WADA's monitoring radar; not for tested athletes.
Citrus aurantium (synephrine) — structurally related to ephedrine. WADA-prohibited in competition, and ⚠ do not take it with grapefruit juice — grapefruit inhibits the CYP3A4 enzyme that metabolises synephrine, which can raise blood levels unpredictably.
Velvet bean, 50mg (L-DOPA) — a direct dopamine precursor. ⚠ L-DOPA can interact with MAOIs and other psychiatric medications. If you take antidepressants or any psychiatric medication, speak to your doctor before using this.
Together that is a substantial cardiovascular load. Not for anyone with a heart condition, high blood pressure, arrhythmia or an anxiety disorder.
Black Market's own warning is worth repeating: discontinue use and seek advice if you experience rapid heartbeat, dizziness, severe headache or shortness of breath — and stop taking it before any surgery.
The focus stack
- Alpha-GPC 50%, 600mg — note the standardisation: 600mg of a 50% material yields around 300mg of actual alpha-GPC. Still a working dose, but half what the headline number suggests
- L-Tyrosine and N-acetyl-L-tyrosine — dopamine and noradrenaline precursors, researched under stress
- Choline bitartrate — a choline source, though poorly absorbed compared with alpha-GPC. Worth knowing that unabsorbed choline is converted by gut bacteria into trimethylamine, which produces a faintly fishy body odour in some people. Harmless, not universal
- BioPerine — absorption enhancer, which in this formula also means the stimulants
Specs (full two-scoop serving)

| Caffeine (3 sources) | 450mg |
| Alpha-GPC 50% | 600mg (~300mg actual) |

| Label | Fully disclosed, no proprietary blends |
22 grams of active ingredients is a lot of material, and it is consistent with the doses claimed. As we explain on our 110 Percent page, scoop weight is a useful sanity check — you cannot fit 10g of citrulline and 5g of betaine into a small scoop.
Where it sits in our range
| RULE | 485mg (242mg one scoop) | Focus-led. Uridine, lion's mane |
| DEFY | 450mg (225mg one scoop) | Best performance dosing. 10g citrulline |
| Thuper Thavage | 400mg, fixed | No scoop flexibility. 5g creatine |
| MVPre 3.0 | 350mg | 10g citrulline, no yohimbine |
| CBUM Thavage | 305mg (153mg one scoop) | Best daily driver |
Of the extreme-stimulant options, DEFY has the best performance dosing — 10g citrulline and 3.2g beta-alanine is genuinely strong. If you want that pump dosing without 450mg of caffeine and four extra stimulants, MVPre 3.0 gives you the same 10g citrulline at 350mg with no yohimbine.
How to take it
- One scoop in 10 to 12oz of water, 15 to 45 minutes before training.
- Two scoops only after establishing tolerance, and never more in 24 hours.
- No other caffeine that day. No grapefruit juice.
- Not every session — tolerance builds fast and there is almost nothing stronger.
- Take creatine separately — there is none in this formula.
Who this is for
- Experienced stimulant users with established tolerance above 300mg
- Anyone who wants genuine clinical pump dosing rather than a stimulant-only product
- People who are not drug tested
- Anyone who wants a fully disclosed label they can verify
- People saving a strong pre-workout for heavy sessions rather than daily use
Who this is not for
Beginners. Even one scoop is 225mg.
Tested athletes. Eria jarensis and synephrine.
Anyone with a heart condition, high blood pressure, arrhythmia or an anxiety disorder.
Anyone on psychiatric medication, without speaking to a doctor about the velvet bean.
Anyone training in the evening, or who drinks coffee through the day.
Anyone who wants a daily driver. Using this daily will burn your tolerance for everything else.
Not for anyone under 18, pregnant or nursing. Stop use before surgery.
Stack it with: creatine. Nothing stimulant-based, and no additional pump product — 10g citrulline is already a full dose.
Frequently asked questions
How much caffeine is in DEFY?
450mg in a full two-scoop serving, or 225mg in one scoop. The full serving is above the 400mg daily figure the FDA cites.
Can I take one scoop?
Yes, and most people should. The tub holds 40 scoops specifically to allow it.
Is 10g of citrulline too much?
It is above the 6 to 8g researched range, which is generous rather than problematic. It is pure citrulline, not malate — matching it with the malate form would need around 20g.
Why is there 5g of betaine when the clinical dose is 2.5g?
It is double the researched amount. That does not double the effect, and higher doses are more likely to cause GI discomfort in some people. Generous rather than twice as effective.
Does the theanine make it smooth?
Partly. At 100mg against 450mg caffeine the ratio is about 1:4.5, where research typically uses 1:2. It takes some edge off but will not make 450mg feel mild.
Can I take it if I am drug tested?
No. Eria jarensis and synephrine both make it unsuitable.
How much alpha-GPC is really in it?
600mg of a 50% standardised material, which yields roughly 300mg of actual alpha-GPC.
Why can't I have grapefruit with it?
Grapefruit inhibits CYP3A4, the enzyme that metabolises synephrine, which can raise blood levels unpredictably.
