Description
Centurion Labz Trance
A night-time formula combining ZMA-style minerals, valerian root and melatonin for sleep quality and recovery.
Founded in Langhorne, Pennsylvania — the same town, the same year
Worth knowing if you shop with us: Centurion Labz was started by two doctors in Langhorne, PA in 2014 — inside a local gym.
Coalition Nutrition opened in Langhorne in 2014 too. Same town, same year. This brand grew out of the same few square miles we did, spreading from that one gym to other gyms, then to independent shops, and eventually to international distribution.
The brand was acquired in 2020 by Trevor Bower, who had discovered it at the Arnold Sports Festival in 2016. Centurion Labz today maintains full label transparency and third-party tests every batch — which is why we still stock it.
Sleep is where recovery actually happens
Worth stating plainly, because it is the reason a supplement shop stocks a sleep product at all.
The great majority of your recovery occurs during sleep, not during the hours after training:
- Growth hormone release peaks during deep sleep — the largest natural pulse of the day happens in the first few hours
- Testosterone is produced predominantly during sleep. Restricting sleep to five hours has been shown to substantially reduce daytime testosterone in healthy young men
- Muscle protein synthesis and connective tissue remodelling both proceed overnight
- Cortisol falls, and the recovery environment improves accordingly
Which means: if your sleep is poor, no supplement in this shop will compensate. Fixing sleep is the highest-leverage thing available to anyone who trains — considerably more so than any pre-workout or test booster.
What the ingredients do
The mineral side — zinc, magnesium and B6, the classic ZMA combination:
- Magnesium supports the calming side of the nervous system, modulating NMDA receptor activity and GABAergic signalling. It is also one of the few nutrients where dietary shortfall is genuinely widespread, and it is lost in sweat
- Zinc is required for testosterone production and also lost in sweat
- B6 is a cofactor for magnesium uptake into cells — it is there to help the other two work, not as filler
Valerian root — one of the better-researched sleep botanicals, associated with reduced time to fall asleep. Worth knowing it has a distinctly unpleasant smell, which is normal.
Melatonin — see below, because the dose matters more than people expect.
⚠ With melatonin, less usually works better
This runs against how melatonin is sold, and it is the most useful thing on this page.
Melatonin is not a sedative. It is a timing signal. Your body releases it as darkness falls to tell your internal clock that night has begun — it does not knock you out.
The amount your body produces naturally is very small, measured in fractions of a milligram. Yet most melatonin products contain 5 or 10mg.
Research repeatedly finds that lower doses work as well or better for falling asleep, with fewer side effects. And morning grogginess is dose-dependent — a large dose is still circulating when your alarm goes off.
Practical advice: check the melatonin content on your tub. If you wake groggy, that is almost always the cause, and a smaller dose is the fix rather than a different product.
⚠ Take it away from food and calcium
The most common mistake with any ZMA-style product, and it directly undermines it.
Zinc and magnesium compete with calcium for absorption. Taking this with a dairy-containing meal or a calcium supplement substantially reduces uptake of both.
Take it 30 to 60 minutes before bed, at least two hours after your last meal.
Also expect vivid dreams. Commonly reported on ZMA-style products, likely related to the B6 and its role in neurotransmitter synthesis. Harmless, and some people enjoy it.
What matters more than any sleep supplement
We would rather say this than sell you something that cannot fix the underlying problem.
- A consistent bed and wake time, including weekends. Your circadian rhythm responds to regularity more than to anything in a capsule
- Light exposure. Bright light in the morning and dim light in the evening. Taking melatonin and then looking at a bright screen sends contradictory signals, and light generally wins
- Caffeine timing. Caffeine has a long half-life — a mid-afternoon pre-workout is still working at bedtime
- A cool, dark room
- Alcohol. It helps you fall asleep and substantially degrades sleep quality afterwards
If you are drinking a 400mg pre-workout at 5pm and wondering why you cannot sleep, that is the answer — and it is free to fix.

How to take it
- 30 to 60 minutes before bed, with the lights dimmed.
- On an empty stomach, at least two hours after eating.
- Never with dairy or a calcium supplement.
- Do not drive afterwards.
- Use it for a purpose rather than every night indefinitely — and if you need something nightly for months, that is worth discussing with a doctor.
Who this is for
- Anyone training hard whose sleep quality has slipped
- People who sweat heavily, where zinc and magnesium losses are real
- Anyone struggling to switch off after evening training
- People wanting one product rather than separate minerals and a sleep aid
Who this is not for
Anyone whose sleep problem is caffeine timing, screens or an inconsistent schedule. Fix those first — this will not out-run them.
Anyone who wakes at 3am and cannot get back to sleep. Melatonin helps with falling asleep rather than staying asleep.
Anyone already taking a ZMA product or a multivitamin with zinc — add up the totals, since the ceiling from all sources is around 40mg.
Anyone taking sedatives, blood thinners, blood pressure or diabetes medication, or immunosuppressants — melatonin and valerian both interact with several drug classes. Speak to your doctor.
Anyone who needs to drive or operate machinery afterwards.
Not for anyone under 18, pregnant or nursing.
Stack it with: nothing else at the same time — take other minerals in the morning to avoid competition.
Frequently asked questions
Why does a supplement shop sell a sleep product?
Because sleep is where recovery happens — growth hormone peaks during deep sleep, testosterone is produced predominantly overnight, and muscle protein synthesis proceeds while you sleep.
Why do I wake up groggy?
Almost always the melatonin dose. Grogginess is dose-dependent, and most products contain far more than your body produces naturally.
Why can't I take it with food?
Zinc and magnesium compete with calcium for absorption, so a dairy-containing meal substantially reduces uptake.
Why am I having vivid dreams?
Commonly reported on ZMA-style products, likely related to B6 and neurotransmitter synthesis. Harmless.
Will it help me stay asleep?
Melatonin helps with falling asleep rather than staying asleep. Waking at 3am is usually a different problem.
Can I take it every night?
Better used for a purpose than by default. If you need it nightly for months, that is worth discussing with a doctor.
Why does valerian smell like that?
It just does. The smell is characteristic of the root and is entirely normal.
What helps sleep most?
Consistent bed and wake times, bright morning light and dim evening light, caffeine timing, a cool dark room, and limiting alcohol.
