Description
Bucked Up Pre-Workout
200mg of caffeine, 6g of citrulline malate, AlphaSize alpha-GPC and Senactiv. Fully disclosed label, creatine free, zero sugar, 30 servings.
This is a daily driver — moderate stimulant, no exotic ingredients, sensible dosing. It is one of the better first pre-workouts, and that is a genuine compliment rather than a backhanded one.
Let's talk about the deer antler velvet
It is the brand's flagship ingredient and the reason most people have heard of Bucked Up. It is also the ingredient least likely to be doing anything.
The claim is that deer antler velvet is rich in IGF-1 — insulin-like growth factor 1, a genuinely important anabolic hormone. Antler growth is one of the fastest forms of tissue growth in mammals, so the premise is not absurd on its face.
But IGF-1 is a peptide, and peptides are digested. Swallowing IGF-1 means your stomach and small intestine break it into amino acids, exactly as they would any other protein. It does not arrive in your bloodstream as IGF-1. This is the same reason we are sceptical of orally administered growth factors elsewhere in our catalogue.
The dose is also 50mg — a small amount of an extract whose active content is not specified.
⚠ And one thing tested athletes must know: IGF-1 is prohibited under WADA category S2. Deer antler velvet has been associated with anti-doping cases historically. If you are tested, do not use this product — regardless of whether the IGF-1 survives digestion, the risk is not worth taking.
None of this makes Bucked Up a bad pre-workout. It makes the marketing hook the weakest part of an otherwise sensible formula.
What is actually doing the work
| Citrulline Malate 2:1 | 6,000mg |
| Beta-Alanine | 2,000mg |
| Caffeine Anhydrous | 200mg |
| AlphaSize Alpha-GPC | 200mg |
| Taurine | 100mg |
| Himalayan Rock Salt | 100mg |
| Deer Antler Velvet Extract | 50mg |
| Also contains | Senactiv (ActiGin), AstraGin |
Two numbers need honest context.
Citrulline malate, 6g. Several retailers describe this as "6g citrulline," which is not the same thing. Citrulline malate is citrulline bonded to malic acid at 2:1, so 6g yields roughly 4g of actual citrulline — below the 6 to 8g range where the research shows consistent pump benefit. Reasonable for a daily driver, but check the wording whenever you compare pre-workouts.
Beta-alanine, 2g. The researched dose is 3.2g. At 2g you will still get some tingling, and carnosine will still build with consistent use, but this is a partial dose rather than a full one.
Senactiv is the underrated ingredient
Ironically, the ingredient worth being interested in is not the one on the front of the tub.
Senactiv (also sold as ActiGin) combines panax notoginseng and rosa roxburghii, and the research on it concerns clearing senescent cells — worn-out cells that stop functioning properly but do not die — and supporting glycogen resynthesis and VO2 max.
That is a genuinely different angle from anything else in a typical pre-workout, and the research, while limited, is at least about the actual ingredient at the actual dose.
AstraGin is included as an absorption enhancer, with a claimed 66.7% increase in citrulline uptake. Treat that specific figure as a supplier claim rather than an independent finding.
200mg is the right dose for a lot of people
This is Bucked Up's real strength and it gets overlooked.
200mg is half the 400mg daily figure the FDA cites for healthy adults — enough to feel, moderate enough to leave room for a coffee, and low enough that it does not wreck your sleep from an afternoon session.
Plenty of people take a 350mg pre-workout, feel wired and anxious, and conclude pre-workouts are not for them. Often they simply needed less.
If you want more from the same brand, Woke AF runs 333mg.
⚠ Two smaller notes
It contains Red 40 Lake, an artificial colour, in at least some flavours. If you avoid synthetic dyes, check your tub — 110 Percent uses beet powder instead.
Das Labs state that the version sold on Amazon does not contain deer antler velvet. Worth knowing if you are comparing formulas across sellers.
Where it sits in our pre-workout range
| Bucked Up | 200mg caffeine, ~4g citrulline | Daily driver. Best starting point |
| 110 Percent | Moderate, ~6g citrulline | 30 servings, larger scoop |
| CBUM Thavage | 305mg, 6g pure citrulline | One or two scoops. Clinical doses |
| MVPre 3.0 | 350mg, 10g citrulline | Strong, well dosed |
Start here if you are new. If you already handle 300mg comfortably and want better pump dosing, Thavage or MVPre give you considerably more.
How to take it
- One rounded scoop in 6 to 8oz of water, 15 to 30 minutes before training.
- Start with half a scoop if you are new to pre-workouts.
- Never more than two scoops in 24 hours.
- Count your coffee. 200mg leaves room in a 400mg day, but not unlimited room.
- Take creatine separately — this is creatine free, which is fine, but creatine needs to be taken daily including rest days.
Who this is for
- Anyone taking their first pre-workout — this is a sensible place to start
- People who find 300mg-plus products jittery or anxious
- Anyone who wants a fully disclosed label with no exotic stimulants
- Afternoon trainers who still want to sleep
- People who value taste — the flavour range is one of the brand's genuine strengths
Who this is not for
Tested athletes. Deer antler velvet and IGF-1 claims make this an unnecessary risk.
Anyone buying it for the deer antler velvet. Buy it for the caffeine, citrulline and Senactiv — those are real.
If pumps are your priority, roughly 4g of actual citrulline is modest. MVPre 3.0 delivers 10g.
If you want maximum beta-alanine, 2g is below the 3.2g standard.
If you avoid artificial colours, check the flavour.
If you want a high-stimulant experience, this is deliberately moderate. Woke AF is the stronger option.
Stack it with: creatine, and a stim-free pump product like GHOST Pump if you want more from the pump side.
Frequently asked questions
How much caffeine is in Bucked Up?
Approximately 200mg per scoop — half the 400mg daily figure cited for healthy adults, which makes it a genuine daily driver.
Does the deer antler velvet actually work?
The claim rests on IGF-1 content, but IGF-1 is a peptide and peptides are digested into amino acids when swallowed. At 50mg of unspecified extract, we would not buy the product for this ingredient.
Can I take it if I am drug tested?
No. IGF-1 is prohibited under WADA category S2 and deer antler velvet has featured in anti-doping cases. Not worth the risk.
How much actual citrulline is in 6g of citrulline malate?
Around 4g. The malate bond is roughly 2:1, so about a third of the weight is malic acid.
Is 2g of beta-alanine enough?
It is below the 3.2g researched dose. Carnosine still builds with consistent use, but this is a partial dose.
What is Senactiv?
A combination of panax notoginseng and rosa roxburghii, researched in relation to clearing senescent cells, glycogen resynthesis and VO2 max. Arguably the most interesting ingredient in the formula.
Does it contain creatine?
No, it is creatine free. Take creatine separately and daily, including rest days.
Does it contain artificial colours?
At least some flavours contain Red 40 Lake. Check your tub if you avoid synthetic dyes.
This is one pre I will be using for a while. Top ingredients, great taste and mixes well. What else is there to say? It's worth your time!
Got the sour gummy flavor and it’s actually pretty good! Not to over powering, and the workout I get after taking this is great! I’ll definitely get more.
Coalition is so helpful for someone just starting out (like myself), their customer service is unmatched.
