Description
Axe & Sledge Ignition Switch
A deliberately stripped-back daily-driver pre-workout — and the most flexible one we stock. One scoop or two, from the same tub.
One tub, two completely different products
This is the reason to buy Ignition Switch, and it is genuinely useful.
| One scoop | Two scoops | |
| Caffeine | 150mg | 300mg |
| L-Citrulline | 4g | 8g |
| Beta-Alanine | 3.4g | 6.8g |
| Servings per tub | 40 | 20 |
| Suits | Beginners, light days, evening sessions | Experienced users, heavy days |
At one scoop this is genuinely beginner-appropriate. 150mg of caffeine is roughly a cup and a half of coffee — the lowest starting point of any stimulant pre-workout on our shelf, and lower than most energy drinks.
At two scoops it is a full-strength product with 300mg of caffeine and 8g of citrulline, which is more citrulline than Thavage or Fresh Pre deliver.
Why that matters practically: most people buy a pre-workout at the wrong strength. Too strong and it makes them anxious; too weak and they escalate to something they do not need. This lets you find your own level without buying two tubs — and it lets you scale within a week, running one scoop on lighter days and two when it counts.
4g of pure citrulline — and it is pure
Not citrulline malate. That distinction matters when comparing labels: a product listing 4g of citrulline malate would deliver only around 2.7g of actual citrulline.
At one scoop, 4g is a working dose but below the 6 to 8g range the research supports. At two scoops, 8g is squarely at the top of it.
If pumps are your priority, use two scoops — or take one scoop alongside a stim-free pump product like NovaPump, which is a sensible way to keep caffeine low while getting full pump dosing.
⚠ 3.4g of beta-alanine per scoop — expect tingling
This is worth knowing before your first serving, because it is higher than most products.
3.4g at a single scoop is already above the standard 3.2g dose. At two scoops you are taking 6.8g — more than double the researched amount.
Doubling beta-alanine does not double the benefit. It works by raising muscle carnosine, and carnosine stores saturate — past a point, more does not produce more. What doubling reliably does is double the tingling.
That sensation is paraesthesia — harmless, fading within about half an hour, and diminishing with regular use. But at 6.8g it is intense, and some people find it genuinely uncomfortable. If you dislike the tingle, stay at one scoop.
Beta-alanine also works by accumulation over two to four weeks rather than acutely, so consistency matters far more than dose size.
The energy side is deliberately simple
- Caffeine anhydrous, 150mg per scoop — straightforward, no exotic stimulants at all
- Theobromine, 50mg — the mild stimulant in cocoa, with a gentler and longer curve than caffeine. It extends the back half rather than sharpening the peak
- Choline bitartrate, 500mg — a choline source for acetylcholine production, supporting focus and mind-muscle connection
- Electrolytes — sensible in a training drink
An honest note on the choline. Choline bitartrate is poorly absorbed compared with CDP-choline or alpha-GPC — Axe & Sledge use CDP-choline in their premium Intake formula for exactly that reason.
Worth knowing too: unabsorbed choline is metabolised by gut bacteria into trimethylamine, which produces a faintly fishy body or breath odour in some people. Harmless, not universal, and the usual explanation when someone notices it after a supplement.
Specs
| Serving size | 1 scoop (5g), or 2 for a full serving |
| L-Citrulline | 4g / 8g (pure) |
| Beta-Alanine | 3.4g / 6.8g |
| Caffeine Anhydrous | 150mg / 300mg |
| Choline Bitartrate | 500mg / 1g |
| Theobromine | 50mg / 100mg |
| Electrolytes | Included |
| Servings | 40 single / 20 double |
| Exotic stimulants | None |
| Label | Fully disclosed |
40 servings is unusually generous — most pre-workouts hold 20 or 25. Taken at one scoop, a tub lasts most people well over a month.
Where it fits in our range
| Ignition Switch | 150mg / 300mg | Widest range. Best value. Best first pre-workout |
| Bucked Up | 200mg | Simple daily driver |
| MVPre 365 | 250mg | 10g citrulline, big nootropic stack |
| CBUM Thavage | 153mg / 305mg | Also scoop-flexible, more complete formula |
Ignition Switch and Thavage are the two scoop-flexible options. Thavage has the more complete formula — Nitrosigine, alpha-GPC, huperzine, more caffeine sources. Ignition Switch is simpler and considerably cheaper per serving, with 40 servings rather than 20.
If you are buying your first pre-workout, this is where we would start you. One scoop, no exotic stimulants, nothing you need to research before taking it — and room to grow into the same tub.
How to take it
- One scoop in 8 to 10oz of water, 15 to 30 minutes before training.
- Two scoops only once you know how one affects you.
- Onset is quick — around 15 to 20 minutes.
- Avoid other caffeine sources on the day, particularly at two scoops.
- Take it consistently if the beta-alanine matters — carnosine builds over weeks.
- Take creatine separately. There is none in this formula.
Who this is for
- Anyone buying their first pre-workout — 150mg with no exotic stimulants is the right starting point
- People who found 300mg-plus products left them anxious
- Anyone who wants to vary intensity across a week from a single tub
- Evening trainers, who can run one scoop and still sleep
- Anyone watching cost per serving — 40 servings is well above the norm
- People who want a fully disclosed label with nothing they need to look up
Who this is not for
If you want a high-stimulant experience, 300mg at two scoops is the ceiling. DEFY and RULE go considerably higher.
If you dislike the beta-alanine tingle, 3.4g per scoop is above standard and 6.8g at two is a lot.
If you want a full nootropic stack, MVPre 365 or Axe & Sledge's own Intake use better-absorbed choline forms and add tyrosine.
If pumps are the priority at one scoop, 4g of citrulline is modest — stack a stim-free pump product.
Not for anyone under 18, pregnant or nursing.
Stack it with: creatine, or a stim-free pump product like NovaPump if you want full pump dosing without more caffeine. Same brand: Farm Fed protein.
Frequently asked questions
How much caffeine is in Ignition Switch?
150mg per scoop, or 300mg at a full two-scoop serving. That makes it the most adjustable pre-workout we stock.
Should I take one scoop or two?
Start with one. At 150mg caffeine and 4g citrulline it is a complete, sensible serving — and one of the few pre-workouts genuinely suitable for a beginner.
How many servings in a tub?
40 at one scoop, 20 at two. That is well above the 20 to 25 most pre-workouts offer.
Is the citrulline pure or malate?
Pure L-citrulline. A product listing 4g of citrulline malate would deliver only around 2.7g of actual citrulline.
Why does it make me tingle so much?
3.4g of beta-alanine per scoop is already above the standard 3.2g, and two scoops is 6.8g. The sensation is paraesthesia — harmless, but doubling the dose doubles the tingle without doubling the benefit.
Does it contain exotic stimulants?
No — caffeine and theobromine only. Nothing that requires a tested-athlete warning or a tolerance discussion.
Why might it make me smell faintly of fish?
Choline bitartrate. Unabsorbed choline is converted by gut bacteria into trimethylamine. Harmless and not universal.
Does it contain creatine?
No. Take creatine separately and daily, including rest days.
